Porte des Bombes, Floriana. Public Gardens at Floriana. My favourite photo. Looking from the Custom House steps across the Grand Harbour towards Senglia. Special occasion at Valletta Main Guard. Inspection of Military equipment at Valletta Main Guard. It looks as if a Royal Engineer unit on parade. To the left of the photo is a 90 cm carbon arc searchlight and searchlights were used by the Royal Engineers from 1899 to 1940 when they became a Royal Artillery asset used for anti-aircraft operations. As there appears to be no sign of bomb damage, I assume the photo is more than likely pre-1940. Searchlights reverted to being a Royal Engineers responsibility in 1962 or 1963. There is a 90 cm carbon arc searchlight on display in the military museum at Fort St Elmo. My thanks to Ian Proud for this additional information. The Royal Opera House, Valletta. Dr. George Bonello the Maltese High Commisioner cuts the ribbon to open the Maltese Fair. Left to Right, The Hon. Dr. Eddie Fenech Adami, the Prime Minister of Malta, Fr. Victor Camilleri and H.E. Dr. George Bonello du Puis the Maltese High Commisioner listen to the Brass band playing on the stage. Bajtra Liqueur made from Maltese Prickly Pears on sale at the Maltese Fair. George Curmi, il-Puse promoting his CD's at the Maltese Fair. Children in traditional Maltese Costume mingle amongst the crowds at the Maltese Fair. The Hon. Dr. Eddie Fenech Adami, the Prime Minister of Malta receives a Painting of Big Ben and The Houses of Parliament with a Maltese Luzzu boat from Francis Galea the Artist from Sliema while H.E. Dr. George Bonello, the Maltese High Commisioner looks on. The Maltese Flag flies proudly at The Brompton Oratory, Brompton Road, London, SW7, where the Celebrated Mass took place later in the day.
